The second step to reading like a grownup is learning how to mark up your reading with a pencil.
Resources:
Short Story Reading
- “The Big Two-Hearted River” by Ernest Hemingway–This is the story we’ll be using throughout this course to practice the Read Like a Grown Up method.
- Pentel P-205–This is my favorite pencil for annotating. The only time I don’t have it on me is when I’m fishing.
Further Reading
To dig deeper into the topics discussed in the video, check out these books:
- The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had, Susan Wise Bauer–Bauer gives a lot of great, genre-specific instruction about using a reading journal to get the most out of your reading. She also includes some interesting reading lists with a one-page summary of each book’s content.
- The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway–If you’re starting to develop a taste for Hemingway, this is a great place to dig deeper. Many of his short stories have recurring characters, so it’s best to read them in order. If you’d like to read his longer fiction, I recommend starting with The Sun Also Rises–fishing, women, bullfights, and beer–and the despair of a post-WWI world.
