  • How to Read a Book, Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren–This is the classic book about reading the classics of Western civilization.  The authors present their method of reading along with specific advice for each genre.  The appendices contain Adler’s complete list of the great books.  This book is very helpful, but applying Adler’s complete method requires a lot of time, work, and patience.
